Stellar Rotation and Planet Ingestion in Giants
نویسنده
چکیده
We investigate the expected increase in the rotation rate of post-main-sequence stars as they expand and ingest orbiting planets. This phenomenon is expected to occur when the stellar radius becomes larger than the planet’s periastron distance. We calculate the expected frequency of planet ingestion during the red giant, horizontal branch (HB), and early asymptotic giant branch phases for planets of mass mp 1MJ. We also calculate the probability of observing anomalous rotation rates in a population of solar metallicity giants as a function of stellar mass and evolutionary stage. Planet ingestion is most easily detectable in a solar mass HB star, with a probability of about 1% for solar-neighborhood metallicity. Our analysis is based on the observed distribution of mass, eccentricity, semimajor axis for extrasolar planets around solar-type main-sequence stars, on stellar evolution models, and on the typical observed rotation rates observed in a sample of solar-neighborhood giants.

The properties of 322 intermediate-mass late-G giants (comprising 10 planet-host stars) selected as the targets of Okayama Planet Search Program, many of which are red-clump giants, were comprehensively investigated by establishing their various stellar parameters (atmospheric parameters including turbulent velocity fields, metallicity, luminosity, mass, age, projected rotational velocity, etc....
متن کاملA Low Stellar Obliquity for Wasp-47, a Compact Multiplanet System with a Hot Jupiter and an Ultra-short Period Planet
We have detected the Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect during a transit of WASP-47b, the only known hot Jupiter with close planetary companions. By combining our spectroscopic observations with Kepler photometry, we show that the projected stellar obliquity is λ = 0± 24. We can firmly exclude a retrograde orbit for WASP47b, and rule out strongly misaligned prograde orbits. Low obliquities have also be...

متن کاملEvolved stars hint to an external origin of enhanced metallicity in planet-hosting stars
Aims. Exo-planets are preferentially found around high metallicity main sequence stars. We aim at investigating whether evolved stars share this property, and what this tells about planet formation. Methods. Statistical tools and the basic concepts of stellar evolution theory are applied to published results as well as our own radial velocity and chemical analyses of evolved stars. Results. We ...
متن کاملTilting Saturn. Ii. Numerical Model
We argue that the gas giants Jupiter and Saturn were both formed with their rotation axes nearly perpendicular to their orbital planes, and that the large current tilt of the ringed planet was acquired in a post-formation event. We identify the responsible mechanism as trapping into a secular spin-orbit resonance that couples the angular momentum of Saturn’s rotation to that of Neptune’s orbit....
